Contract Upholstery Goes Green.

Tree

Seeing the trends in consumer products like groceries and clothing, fabric mills have begun to offer a growing selection of “green” upholstery products.

Green upholstery has taken on a variety of definitions depending on fiber content and methods of processing.  In general, upholstery fabrics are considered green if they fall into one of the following three categories:

  • ORGANIC.  Organic products are made form at least 70% raw materials, such as organic cotton or linen, that have been grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
  • RENEWABLE. Renewable products are made from at least 25% renewable materials such as bamboo, sorona, ingeo, soy, capiz shells or wood that comes from certified, well-managed forests.
  • RECYCLED.  Recycled products contain a mix of at least 25% previously used materials such as cotton, glass and polyester made from soda bottles.

Green upholstery has become an increasingly viable product line for many fabric mills which has led to a greater variety of available styles, colors and patterns that fit the “green” label.  Once a sleepy category, demand for green upholstery has grown as more end-user companies adopt environmentally conscious buying policies.  The price tag for green fabrics is still higher than non-green equivalents but many environmentally conscious companies find the costs justifiable.

For demanding health care, education, hospitality and recreation environments, fabric finisher Crypton©  has introduced a green line that offers Crypton’s© trademark fluid-resistant, stain-resistant, anti-microbial, and anti-fungal performance using green manufacturing standards.
